Educational Institutions of the Muslim Revival Movement
A cluster of Muslim educational institutions were founded in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, either directly by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan or inspired by his Aligarh Movement. Knowing which institution was founded where, and by whom, is a recurring LAT theme.
Directly founded by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan:
- Educational institution, Muradabad (1859)
- Educational institution, Ghazipur (1864)
- Scientific Society, Ghazipur — for spreading modern science
- Translation institution (1863) — for translating Western science books
- M.A.O. School (1875)
- M.A.O. College, Aligarh (1877) — the centerpiece of the Aligarh Movement
- Muhammadan Educational Conference (1886)
- Aligarh University (as an institution/tradition) developed from M.A.O. College, and is dated to 1920 in terms of full university status.
Institutions established on the same pattern (inspired by Aligarh) in other cities:
- Islamia College, Lahore
- Muslim College, Kanpur (Kawnpur)
- Sindh Madrassah-tul-Islam, Karachi — described as the most famous Madrassa of Karachi where great Muslim leaders (including Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah) studied.
Why it matters: LAT often gives a city (Muradabad, Ghazipur, Lahore, Kanpur, Karachi) and asks which institution was founded there, or gives an institution and asks the founding year — precise city-year-institution matching is essential, since many of these overlap in theme (all Muslim educational institutions of the same broad era).
