Muslim Writers & Reformers of the Aligarh Era

Alongside Sir Syed, several other writers and scholars contributed to Muslim intellectual revival in the late 19th century. Their books are commonly tested.

• Maulana Altaf Hussain Hali: a poet and close associate of Sir Syed. His most famous book is 'Musadas-e-Hali', a long poem reflecting on the decline of Muslims and urging reform.
• Maulana Shibli Naumani: a religious scholar and historian. His famous book on the life (Seerat) of the Holy Prophet (SAW) is 'Seerat-un-Nabi (SAW)'.
• Maulana Nazeer Ahmad: wrote the novel 'Toba-tul-Nasooh', considered one of the earliest Urdu novels with a strong moral/reformist theme. He is also credited as the author of 'Ibn-ul-Waqt'.
• Deputy Nazeer Ahmed and Maulana Altaf Hussain Hali are both associated with reformist Urdu literature of this period, sometimes confused with each other in exam options — remember Hali wrote Musadas-e-Hali, while Nazeer Ahmad wrote the novels.
