Sir Syed Ahmed Khan & the Aligarh Movement
After the disaster of 1857, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan realized that Muslims needed modern education to recover their political and social standing. He launched what is known as the Aligarh Movement, a broad effort to reform Muslim thinking, promote loyalty to the British (to avoid further persecution), and above all spread modern scientific education among Muslims.
Key institutions and dates established by Sir Syed:
- Muradabad: an educational institution in 1859
- Ghazipur: an educational institution in 1864
- Scientific Society: established in Ghazipur, to translate and spread modern Western scientific knowledge among Muslims
- Translation institution (1863): Sir Syed set up an institution specifically for translating modern science books written in Western languages
- M.A.O. School (Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental School), founded in 1875
- M.A.O. College, started in 1877 β this later became Aligarh Muslim University; it is considered the flagship achievement of the Aligarh Movement
- Muhammadan Educational Conference: established by Sir Syed in 1886, to spread the aims of the Aligarh Movement across India through annual meetings
Sir Syed as an author:
- 'Loyal Muhammadans of India' β a book in which Sir Syed argued that Muslims were loyal to the British, written to defend Muslims after 1857
- 'Risala-e-Asbab-e-Baghawat-e-Hind' β on the causes of the War of Independence 1857
- 'Tehzeeb-ul-Ikhlaq' (also called 'Risala Tehzib-ul-Ikhlaq') β a journal/book on moral and social reform, published in 1847
- 'Assar-ul-Sanadeed' β a book about the ancient/historic buildings of Delhi
Institutions founded elsewhere on the pattern of the Aligarh Movement:
- Islamia College, Lahore β established following the line of the Aligarh Movement
- Muslim College, Kanpur (Kawnpur) β established following the Aligarh line
Other figures connected to this era:
- Thomas Arnold, a British scholar, was closely associated with M.A.O. College
- William Hunter, a Scottish anatomist and physician turned historian, wrote about the condition of Muslims after 1857
Why it matters: Aligarh Movement questions are extremely date- and place-heavy β LAT frequently asks which institution was founded in which year and city, and which book Sir Syed authored on which subject.
